In the parents guide to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition we will look at this remastered release of a game originally released in 2011. Doom demo size. Skyrim puts you in the role of the Dragonborn, a blank slate character that you create and write your own story as you wander through the world. The graphics have been updated a tad and it was given a few new features to help, but it is still aged somewhat. If you are looking for a full review of Skyrim, please look here to find our review.

What Parents Need To Know
Before we get into too much of this, I would like to point out that the PSVR (PlayStation VR) version of this game is identical to the standard version reviewed here with the exception of the lack of the Creation Club availability (mentioned below). It is otherwise, the same game with different controls. Also of note, this is a rerelease of a 2011 title from the PS3 and Xbox 360. Again, they are essentially the same games.
Death and Killing
Skyrim is a game that will see your kids killing humans, animals and fantasy creatures alike. They can kill by choice or, in some cases, have to kill to advance or finish quests. There is blood and gore; you can get a skill that allows decapitation and there is a 'kill cam' that can show this in all of its slow-motion glory. The game actually starts you out as a prisoner awaiting your own beheading; you see the prisoner before you get beheaded and then step up for your own turn.
There is a completely optional questline called The Dark Brotherhood that has the player assassinate various characters (humanoid) to ascend to the top of this assassin's guild.
Calling this intense violence is a bit extreme in most cases. The kill cam decapitations are a bit intense, but beyond that…and the beheading…intense is a strong word.
Sex, Nudity and Marriage
Nudity is minimal. You can take a dead persons armor, leaving them in their underwear, but they are never completely naked. You have the ability to marry one of your companions regardless of race or gender. This means that you can marry a companion of the same gender. Marrying the companion does not allow for any new interactions (like sex or even kissing).
There is a pair of books called The Lusty Argonian Maid Vol 1, as well as it's sequel Vol 2, that is not particularly difficult to find if you go looking. Volume 1 can be found in 14 locations; Volume 2 can be found in 3 and bought from one merchant. It is an adult-themed book. There is only innuendo, no overt sex. Here is a link containing the entire text. It's rather short.
The game contains some revealing clothing, but to my recollection, attention is never brought to it.
Drugs and Alcohol
There is a drug called Skooma that is part of the lore of The Elder Scrolls universe in Skyrim. At no point is the player forced to consume it, but it is available in many locations as randomly found loot. Pokemon home impossible trades.
The game also contains various types of alcohols (mead, wine and ale) and pubs. The mead can be purchased or found randomly throughout the world. Consuming this mead will cause the player to 'get drunk' for a short time. There is one optional side-quest in which the player participates in a drinking contest and becomes drunk.
Language
Skyrim contains some mild language. The word da*m and some women are referred to as whores.
GIM Age suggestion
If you are the type of parent that talks to your children about the topics mentioned above, a typical 12 year old can handle this game. If your child is somewhat sensitive about the graphic level of gore, I would consider 15 and up.
Skyrim Remastered Xbox One
My son played the VR version of Skyrim, which is the exact same game but in virtual reality, at 7. He has been exposed to games of this nature before and handles such violence very, very well. He sees me playing games all the time and always wants to try them out. I would never recommend such a young age on such a violent game, though. Played is a bit of a stretch; it is a difficult game for a 7 year old to grasp.
Ease of Play
As mentioned my 7 year old had a difficult time grasping the mechanics. He didn't really care, he just wanted to swing his sword and kill wildlife roaming about.

As for ease of play only, a 10 year old is more than capable of handling the controls and will have a high enough reading ability to play this game. Most of the game is voiced, but the menus are obviously not.
Extra Content and Consumerism
The original release of Skyrim had three expansions, all of which are included in the Special Edition and VR versions of the game. Let's take just a moment to talk about the PC version…there are a metric ton of mods available for the PC version. Some of which do dirty things to the game, many of which just make quality of life enhancements to the game. Many modders fix the bugs that Bethesda, the developer of the game, have left in for 8 years now.
The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Esrb Rating
There are no loot box mechanics in this game. There is however something called The Creation Club. It's a scummy way that Bethesda has found to charge for mods for their games. None of these are essential to gameplay in any way; they are completely optional. In order to purchase items on the Creation Club, you must buy packs of credits to use. It is a scummy tactic, through and through.
